There are also many different types of projector screens on the market today. When you think of a large screen onto which a moving image (video) or still image is projected, a movie theater comes to mind. In a movie theater, a large screen is permanently fixated on to a wall. A projector screen consists of a screen and a support structure. Its function is to display large imagery for an audience, like students in a lecture hall or employees in a conference room. Projector screens are made to be permanent (fixed), semi-permanent or mobile. They can also be curved or flat screened. They can be erected vertically or hung on the wall. The surface colors of this image displaying equipment is usually pure white, grey or off-white.
Today, the market offers a wide range of projector screens, such as front projector screen, rear projection screen, manual projection screen, and electric projector screens. The most commonly used are Front Projector Screens. They are made from vinyl in white or grey color. Opaque surfaces don’t allow the light to pass through them, which makes these highly reflective devices to be the best choice for displaying both still images and motion pictures. Front projection screens are very flexible, durable, light, portable and cost-effective.
Another kind of screens are Rear Projection Screens, which do allow light to pass through them. These particular devices usually have light grey or black surfaces. They are used for in-door and outdoor projection purposes. In these types of uses, the projector is situated behind the screen instead of its front. In addition, the space between the screen and projector must be dark. To attain the highest quality picture rear projection screen should be used during the night.
Motorized projection screens are also very popular. They are operated by a remote control or wired switches, using retraction and drop mode. They also can be called electric projector screens. The screen is dropped and raised with the help of an electric motor. Available in tensioned and non-tensioned versions, motorized projection screens are very effective in home and business settings equally, as they are easy to operate and preserve the esthetics of the room by being hidden when not in use.
Last but not least are screens with manual operation set up. They are just like window shades, can be pulled down by hand and will go up with another tug. Most likely they are mounted on the walls. The very inexpensive ones are non-tensioned manual projection screens. The downside to them is that they can easily be moved by a sudden flow of air, which can cause disturbance. So if you need to use them indoors, they will be perfect, because the air flow is limited or non-existent there.
